Description

Longboard Leash Overview

A longboard needs a leash that can follow it through a whole session without dragging, tangling or pulling hard at the ankle, and this is the model we build for that job. L22513 is the 8ft regular leash in our line: long enough for an 8ft2 or 9ft board to roll and spin in whitewater without loading the cuff, and built on the thicker cord we reserve for the medium-sized surf most longboarders actually ride. We supply it as a wholesale surf leash manufacturer to surf shops, schools and rental operators who need a regular surf leash that works every day rather than a competition spare, and any of them can order it as a custom surf leash under their own label. The cuff is double padded, the cord is top-grade TPU, and both ends turn on 316 stainless steel swivels, so the cord stays free of twist while you are paddling out or sitting on the board. If you stock longboards, this is the length that belongs on the wall beside them.

Key Features

  • Double-padded neoprene cuff. Two layers of neoprene sit between the webbing and the skin, so this surfboard ankle leash spreads the pull of a loaded cord across the ankle instead of biting into one spot during a long paddle or a set on the head. - Top-grade TPU cord. The cord takes the stretch when a board is washed in and springs back to length afterwards, which is what keeps the leash feeling lively after a season of use instead of hanging slack. - 316 stainless steel swivels at both ends. Marine-grade stainless resists salt-water corrosion and lets the cord rotate freely, so it does not coil up or wrap around the rail while you are sitting on the board. - Streamlined rail saver. A webbing guard takes the wear where the cord meets the board, protecting the rail from sawing and shielding the cord from a sharp edge. - Strong hook-and-loop closure. The cuff opens wide and closes down firm, so it goes on quickly over a bare ankle or a thin wetsuit boot and stays where you put it through duck dives and wipeouts. - Light, low-drag build. The whole assembly stays light on the ankle and clears the water rather than trailing behind the board.

Length & Cord Size

  • Eight feet of cord. This 8ft surf leash is the longboard length in the range: it suits boards from roughly 8ft up to about 9ft, which is where a shorter cord starts coming tight every time the board rolls in the wash.
  • How surf leash length is normally matched. The usual rule is to match the leash to the board — an 8ft board takes an 8ft leash. Step up one length when a longboard is used by a heavier surfer or in bigger surf, because the board travels further once it is pushed.
  • Seven millimetres of thickness. The cord measures 9/32 in (7 mm), the middle of what we build: heavier than the 5 mm cords intended for small-wave shortboards, lighter than the 8 mm cords for serious surf. This 7 mm surf leash is the practical choice for medium waves and all-round conditions, where you want strength without adding weight to the ankle.
  • Cuff fit is adjustable. The hook-and-loop closure overlaps enough to sit on a bare ankle or over a thin boot, and the padding lies flat instead of bunching behind the heel.
  • Measure the board, not the rider. A 9ft board on an 8ft leash is normal. A 7ft mid-length on the same leash leaves a lot of cord in the water, so step down to the 7ft model for those boards.
  • When to step down. If the range you buy for is mostly 6ft–7ft6 boards, the 7ft 7 mm model carries the same cord and cuff build in a shorter length.

Board Pairing & Related Gear

Put this leash next to the boards it was made for. The 8ft2 epoxy surfboard, the 9ft epoxy longboard and the 9ft1 wood-deck longboard all fall in the same bracket, so a shop can build a board-and-leash set in one line on the wall and a school can replace a board and its leash in the same order. Fleets that share cuffs between riders of different sizes usually move to the 8ft non-slip version at the same length, while programmes that want the lightest possible cuff choose the Hypalon model — either way, the surf leash length stays the same. Accessories are easier to buy together than one at a time: we also supply honeycomb, timber and G10 glass fins, traction tail pads and centre pads, board covers and racks, so a board order, its leash and the rest of the fit-out can be confirmed in a single conversation with your surf leash supplier contact.

Conditions & All-Round Use

  • Mellow beach breaks on a longboard. Long, rolling waves give an 8ft board plenty of time to turn, and the extra cord keeps it clear of your legs while you walk it out through the shore break.
  • Surf school lessons. An instructor putting beginners on the 8ft0 soft-top or the 9ft longboard gets an 8ft surf leash that stays out of the way during the push-and-stand drill, with a cuff a first-timer can fasten without help.
  • Rental and hire fleets. A regular surf leash with a padded cuff and stainless swivels is the kind of item a rental desk can hand out all morning, rinse at lunchtime and hand out again.
  • Point and reef breaks with a long paddle. On a wave that takes real paddling to reach, the length lets the board sit further away while you wait without tugging at the ankle.
  • Medium, building surf. This is where the 7 mm surf leash earns its place: enough cord to hold a longboard in a pushing set, without the extra weight of an 8 mm cord.
  • Cold-water sessions. The cuff opens wide enough to close over a thin boot and sits back down on a bare ankle in summer, so the same leash covers both ends of the season.

Specifications

Sixty percent of this leash is thermoplastic polyurethane — the cord itself. That share is what gives the leash its stretch and its memory: it absorbs the pull when a board is washed in by a set, then returns to its original length instead of staying stretched out of shape. The 15% polypropylene sits in the webbing, the rail saver strap and the cuff backing, chosen because it takes on very little water and holds its strength through a full day of being wet. Ten percent neoprene is the padding between the cuff and the ankle, 10% nylon covers the stitching and reinforcement that hold the parts together, and 5% stainless steel accounts for the metal hardware at each end. A 7 mm surf leash built from these proportions stays light enough to forget about on the ankle while still carrying material where the load actually lands. The cord is supplied in a translucent blue with a black cuff, so it reads clearly on a shop display. Holding those proportions steady from one production run to the next is what lets a wholesale surf leash manufacturer supply the same cord to the same shop, season after season.

Care & Maintenance

  • Rinse after every session. Fresh water clears the sand and salt that work into the hook-and-loop and the swivels. A surfboard ankle leash that is rinsed lasts noticeably longer than one that is packed away wet.
  • Dry in the shade. Leave it out of direct sun and never on a hot car roof or dashboard; heat is what makes a cord go stiff and a cuff lose its grip.
  • Check the swivels and cuff before you paddle out. Both swivels should turn freely and the closure should still grip. Sand in a swivel is the usual cause of a cord that coils.
  • Store it loose. Coiled tight around a board in a bag for months puts a set in the cord. Hang it straight or loop it loosely between sessions.
  • Retire it when the cord is damaged. Deep nicks near the ends, a milky or stiff cord, or a cuff that no longer holds are all signs to replace rather than repair.
  • Use it in the water only. This leash is not a life-saving device; it is designed to keep a board attached to its rider while surfing.

Ordering & Delivery

  1. Tell us the length, cord thickness and quantity you need. As a wholesale surf leash manufacturer we build this model at 8ft and 7 mm and can quote the matching 5ft, 6ft and 7ft lengths on the same order.
  2. Ask your sales contact about sample availability and the current production schedule before you set a launch or replacement date.
  3. If you want a custom surf leash for your shop or school programme, confirm cuff colour, header card and any branding at this stage, and send the artwork you would like us to work from.
  4. Agree the packing format and carton quantities you want, especially if the leashes are going straight onto a display peg or into a rental store.
  5. Confirm shipping terms, port and the documents your own customs process needs, so nothing is held up after production.
  6. Set your reorder point with your surf leash supplier contact, so the 8ft length is already scheduled when the longboard season comes round again.

Scale & Supply Capability

CIMI is a factory-based supplier with 16 years in surf and watersports hardgoods, manufacturing at our own facility rather than sourcing through traders. Chain stores, supermarkets and surf-brand stores buy from us because one supplier covers a full accessory assortment, so a season's order and its reorders can be planned together. We take on OEM and private-label work, adapting designs, colourways and branding to your programme, and we schedule production against your agreed range plan. Send us your buy list and target dates, and we will confirm what we can make and when.

FAQ

What surf leash length should I match to my board?

Match the leash to the board rather than to the rider: an 8ft board takes an 8ft leash, and a 9ft longboard is usually fine on the same length because the extra foot of board rolls instead of pulling. If the board is used in bigger surf, or by a heavier surfer, going up one length gives it more room to travel before the cord comes tight. This model sits at 8ft, which covers most longboards from about 8ft to 9ft.

Will the 8ft surf leash work on a 9ft longboard?

Yes, for the conditions this leash is built for. A 9ft board carries more momentum, so the extra foot of cord gives it space to roll in the wash instead of loading the cuff. The rail saver keeps the cord off the rail where it crosses the tail, and the swivels at both ends stop the cord from twisting as the board turns. Riders who regularly take a 9ft board into bigger, higher-energy surf often move up to the 9ft 8 mm leash instead.

Is the 7 mm surf leash too thick for small surf?

Seven millimetres is the middle of the range, not the heavy end. On small, soft days a 5 mm or 6 mm cord feels lighter on the ankle and is what we build for shortboards in those conditions. Keep the 7 mm cord for medium surf, longboards and all-round use, where the extra material gives the leash a longer working life and a firmer feel when the board is pulled.

What makes this a regular surf leash?

Regular describes the cuff and build in our line, not the cord. The same 8ft x 7 mm TPU cord is also offered with a non-slip neoprene cuff and with an ultra-light Hypalon cuff, and those two models are named after the cuff. This version uses the double-padded neoprene cuff with a hook-and-loop closure, which is the most comfortable option for a rider who wears the leash for a whole session.

How do I keep the surfboard ankle leash from twisting?

Twist almost always comes from the swivels or the way the rail saver is threaded. Check that both stainless swivels turn freely before you paddle out, rinse any sand out of them after a session, and make sure the rail saver is looped around the rail rather than twisted through the plug. If a cord has been stored coiled tightly for months, hang it straight for a day and it will settle back.

Can we order a custom surf leash with our own branding?

Yes. Cuff colour, header card and branding can be adapted for shop and school programmes, and the cord length and thickness stay as specified. Send the artwork and the quantities you have in mind and we will confirm what is possible for your order. Your surf leash supplier contact can talk you through the options before anything goes into production.
