Description

Product Overview

This is a three-piece tail pad built for the back foot: a square-pattern deck pad that runs from the tail block up past the rail in three separate die-cut pieces, backed with 3M adhesive. Each piece sits where the rear foot lands when you drive off the bottom, so the pad gives you a defined edge to push against instead of a soft, vague tail. The format suits a rider who wants clear feedback. A three-piece set lets the outer pieces follow the rail line while the centre piece stays over the stringer, which keeps grip consistent when the board rolls onto a rail. It also lets the pad follow the curve of a tail rather than fight it. As a surf traction pad it is aimed at shortboards first, but the layout also works on longboards, funboards and rental decks where the tail is wide enough for all three pieces to sit flat. The pad sits inside a wider deck-hardware range. Fins, covers and a surf leash for every board length run through the same programme, and there is a surfboard rack format for travel, storage, display and bike mounting, so an accessory order can be filled from one supplier instead of four. Pads are shown in matte black with red and neon green detailing. Leashes | Regular surf leash, non-slip strap, Hypalon strap, bodyboard leash, SUP leash Fins | Honeycomb, timber, G10 glass and nylon fins, plus fin accessories Traction | Surfboard traction pads, centre pads, skimboard pads, waxless pads Covers | Basic bag, regular bag, stretch cover, bodyboard bag Racks | Travel rax and tie-downs, storage racks, display racks, surfboard rack formats for bike mounting Wax inserts & paddles | Wax inserts, surf paddles, SUP paddles

Pattern & Grip Surface

  • Square grid texture — the deck surface repeats a square grid across all three pieces, so grip stays consistent whether the back foot pushes straight back or rolls the board onto a rail. A regular pattern also wears evenly, which keeps the feel the same through a full season of use.
  • Raised centre arch — a moulded arch sits under the mid-foot and gives the back foot something to locate against when you step back for a turn. It works as a role aid as much as a grip feature.
  • Perforated sections — cut-outs through the pad let water and air pass instead of trapping a film underfoot, and they help the pad flex with the deck curve rather than lift at the edge.
  • Accent slits — narrow slits cut through the grip add bite near the tail block and give the pad a little compliance where the deck tightens into the rail.
  • Matte finish — the surface stays matte rather than glossy, so a wet deck does not turn the pad into a mirror and the texture stays readable underfoot.
  • Consistent feel across the set — every piece carries the same square pattern, so this surf traction pad feels the same under the centre of the foot as it does along the rail. That consistency is what makes a surfboard traction pad predictable when you shift weight mid-turn.

Three-Piece Set & Deck Fit

Three pieces give you options a single sheet does not. Set the centre piece over the stringer first, then angle the two outer pieces to follow the rail curve. On a squash or rounded squash tail they usually sit almost straight; on a swallow or a wide pin they fan out slightly.

Before you commit, measure across the tail where the pad will sit, rail to rail, and compare that with the combined width of the set. If the tail is narrower than the set, plan to trim the outer pieces — cut from the rail side so the centre piece keeps its shape and the pattern stays symmetrical.

Tail shape matters more than board length. A longboard traction pad often uses the same set spread wider apart to cover a broader tail, while a shortboard keeps the pieces tight for a compact, positive feel. Neither layout is wrong; it comes down to where the back foot actually lands.

Ask us for the cut dimensions of the three pieces if you are working with a template you have not fitted before. A paper template traced from the deck is the quickest way to check the traction pad for surfboard fit before any backing is peeled.

On a very narrow tail, a one-piece pad or a trimmed set will always sit flatter than an untrimmed three-piece. Trimming does not affect how the pad performs, but it does change the outline, so do it before installation rather than after.

Fitting & Care

  1. Strip the old pad, then take off wax with a plastic scraper and wipe the deck with warm water and a soft cloth. A traction pad for surfboard decks bonds most reliably to bare, dry laminate, so let the surface dry completely before going further.
  2. Lay the three pieces out dry and check the spacing against the back foot. Mark the outline with low-tack tape before anything is peeled.
  3. Peel the liner from one end of the centre piece and press it down from the stringer outward, working air out as you go. Repeat with the two outer pieces.
  4. Press the edges firmly with a thumb or a roller. The 3M backing needs pressure to bond, not just contact.
  5. Leave the board flat for a few hours before riding so the adhesive can settle.
  6. Rinse with fresh water after salt water use, keep the surfboard tail pad out of direct sun when the board is stored, and check the surf leash strap for wear at the same time.
  7. To remove, warm the pad gently, lift a corner with a thin plastic blade and peel slowly. Clean the residue off the deck before fitting a replacement.

Where It's Used

  • Shortboard replacement — the most common job. A worn, polished or lifting pad comes off and a fresh one goes on, usually inside an hour on the repair bench.
  • New board assembly — board builders and surf board manufacturers fit the set before a board is packed for shipping or set on a surfboard rack for display, so the deck leaves the workshop finished instead of needing a pad fitted later by the dealer.
  • Surf schools and rental fleets — pads on hire boards take constant abuse. The three-piece format lets a damaged outer piece be replaced on its own, and fleets usually fit the set at the same time as the surf leash already on each board.
  • Longboard and funboard tails — used as a longboard traction pad with the pieces set wider apart across a broad tail, where a compact shortboard layout would leave the rail bare.
  • Deck refresh jobs — riders who want a different pattern or a cleaner look without changing boards, and the shops that keep pads on the shelf for exactly that customer.
  • Repair counters — a lifting pad is a quick fix to offer alongside fin replacement and leash swaps, which gets a customer's board back in the water the same day.

Ordering & Delivery

  1. Confirm the code and the set.
  2. Confirm the colourway. State the finish you need for the season, and send artwork if the pad is to carry your own branding.
  3. Confirm packing and labelling. Tell us whether the pad should be bagged, headered or boxed for your shelf, or left bulk-packed for board builders.
  4. Confirm quantities and timing. Give a target in-market date rather than just an order date. Chain accounts and surf board manufacturers working towards a board launch need production planned backwards from that date.
  5. Ask your sales contact about sample availability, the current lead time for your destination and the delivery terms that apply to your order.
  6. Plan the rest of the buy at the same time. If the order also includes a surfboard rack or other deck hardware, list it in the first enquiry so everything can be scheduled together.

Scale & Supply Capability

CIMI is a factory-based supplier with 16 years in surf and watersports hardgoods, manufacturing at our own facility rather than sourcing through traders. Chain stores, supermarkets and surf-brand stores buy from us because one supplier covers a full accessory assortment, so a season's order and its reorders can be planned together. We take on OEM and private-label work, adapting designs, colourways and branding to your programme, and we schedule production against your agreed range plan. Send us your buy list and target dates, and we will confirm what we can make and when.

FAQ

How do I choose between this three-piece pad and a one-piece tail pad?

A three-piece set gives you a defined centre over the stringer and separate rail pieces, which suits riders who want to feel the edges of the pad under the back foot. A one-piece sheet feels softer and more continuous and is quicker to fit on a narrow tail. If you are replacing a pad on an existing board and want the same outline, keep the piece count the same. This surfboard tail pad is the three-piece version; if the deck is narrow or heavily curved, ask us for the cut dimensions before deciding.

Will it work on a longboard or a wide-tailed funboard?

The layout spreads well on wide tails, so it is often used as a longboard traction pad with the outer pieces set further apart. Check that the centre piece still sits over the stringer and that both outer pieces land inside the rail line. If there is a gap at the rail, move all three outward rather than stretching the space between them. On a narrow pintail, plan to trim the outer pieces before fitting.

Do I need wax on top of the pad?

No. The square pattern on this surf traction pad is meant to be ridden bare, and wax fills the grid and blunts the grip. If the pad picks up wax from the rest of the deck, clean it with warm water and a soft brush rather than a solvent, which can dull the surface.

Can I move the pad after it has been pressed down?

Once the 3M backing has cured, lifting it will stretch the foam and leave adhesive on the deck. If the position is wrong, warm the pad gently, lift a corner with a thin plastic blade and peel slowly, then clean the residue before refitting. Doing this within the first hour is far easier than after a few days of riding. A surfboard traction pad that has been re-seated usually needs a fresh adhesive sheet to reach the same hold as a first fit.

What holds the pad to the deck?

A 3M pressure-sensitive adhesive backing. It bonds to clean, dry laminate and needs firm pressure along the edges rather than hand contact alone. On a traction pad for surfboard decks that live in the sun, the bond is only as good as the preparation — wax, salt and dust are the usual causes of a lifting edge.

Can we order this pad in our own colour or with our logo?

Ask us about colourways and branding when you enquire. Pads can be produced to a colour and print direction agreed for the order, and if the finish has to match a board line, send the reference with the enquiry so it can be checked before production. Keep the piece count and pattern the same if you want the fit guidance on this product to apply unchanged.
